2013 Spirit of Wellness Honorees

There are inspiring stories of member succeeding and overcoming obstacles throughout the Center for Health & Fitness. CHF set out to share some of the most impactful stories by featuring these five members as honorees at its Spirit of Wellness Celebration.

You get what you give. If this axiom holds true, Earl Eastcott is getting a lot out of the Center for Health and Fitness (CHF). Earl isn’t your typical CHF member – he’s also its most prominent volunteer. Donating his time to CHF for nearly a decade, it’s almost a guarantee you’ve seen him helping out around the gym.

Doing Pilates at the age of 100 is a lofty goal for anyone, but that’s just what 87-year-old CHF member Peggy Jenssen sees in her future – and she doesn’t plan on letting anything get in her way. “I’ll never stop doing Pilates,” says Peggy. Five years and a few extensive spinal surgeries later, her goal is still well within reach.

“Life will knock you down at times, and if you don’t build yourself back up, you’ll stay down.  It’s not realistic to think you won’t face adversity,” says Center for Health and Fitness (CHF) member Jim Wade, 63, who knows first-hand how challenging life can sometimes be.

Why do we fall? So we can learn to pick ourselves up – something at which Center for Health and Fitness (CHF) member Tammy Rogers is very adept. “As quickly as I’m down on the ground, I’m just as quick getting back up on my feet,” says Tammy, who has been occasionally falling since birth.

Center for Health & Fitness (CHF) member Bob Horn is a legend in the pool. A collegiate and high school All-American, Bob competed as a water polo player in the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne and again four years later in Rome.

2012 Spirit of Wellness Honorees

After recovering from a stroke that severely impacted his mobility, Randy made fitness a priority so he could regain his strength to walk again. Chances are you’ve seen him working out at CHF because he’s there at least six times a week. Randy’s strength and determination is something to admire.

Seventeen years ago Tom joined CHF carrying 240 pounds on his 5’10” frame, and ready to live a healthier life. He expected to lose some weight, but he had no idea how many life-long friends he’d make along the way, and that fitness would save his life.

Jackie struggled with her weight most of her adult life. Then marriage, two kids and a busy schedule left her little time for herself. Ready to make a change, Jackie promised herself to workout five days a week. She dropped more than 90 pounds and proves anything is possible when you put your mind to it.

A story about health and love—Jim, 81, and Barbara, 79, both worked out three times a week and met at CHF. They had both given up on finding love again, but luckily fate had something much more exciting awaiting them.

After visiting a family member in the hospital, KC began evaluation her own health and decided it was time to lead a better quality of life. She set a goal to lose weight and success by staying diligent.

2011 Spirit of Wellness Honorees

Hannah Laurence

Hannah suffered from scoliosis and underwent several surgeries after her spinal curvature left her paralyzed. The months and years that followed showed Hanna's true spirit as she had to completely relearn to walk.

Bob Lonsdale

Bob has been a member of the Center for Health & Fitness for more than 16 years and found friends who've helped him overcome the two biggest challenges he's ever faced--including the amputation of his leg in 2010.

Joyce Francisco

After recovering from breast cancer and multiple knee and foot surgeries, Joyce made her fitness a priority so she could continue to travel and lead a life full of vitality. She's living proof that with determination anything is possible.

Nikki Townsend
After having a baby and experiencing some weight gain, Niki decided to set a good example for her daughter and make her own health a priority. She set a goal to lose the weight and found a strong support system that helped her succeed.

Carrie Koyanagi

Asthma, cancer, diabetes, back and knee pain were just some of the challenges facing Carrie. But with determination and support from her new fitness center friends, she's achieved her goals and inspiring others to do the same.

CHF's 250 Club & 300 Club
Many Center for Health & Fitness members demonstrate an outstanding commitment to their health by visiting the fitness center regularly throughout the year. To recognize these members and celebrate their success, CHF created the 250 Club and 300 Club—exclusive groups composed of dedicated members who've checked in to the fitness center at least 250 or 300 times in one year.
