Kyle Thompson’s Monday Mentality

When 31-year-old Kyle Thompson started working out at the Center for Health & Fitness (CHF) in June of 2016, he tipped the scales at 355 pounds; his heaviest weight ever. But less than a year later, the gritty CHF member has already drastically changed his lifestyle at, what he describes as, “the flip of a switch” – investing time and energy in his personal health and newfound philosophy that snooze buttons no longer exist and every day is Monday.

“I had always been athletic and active, but once my college football career ended, I fell into a trap of drinking, partying and eating a lot more,” said Kyle. “I just had a five to six year lazy spell. It’s never intentional when that happens, but one year turns into two and, before you realize it, you’re way overweight and out of shape.”

Kyle’s initial motivation for getting back into shape came in the form of a planned helicopter ride to Catalina Island last year. Much to his embarrassment, he was told he was too heavy to board the chopper.

“It was kind of a kick in the pants and a wake-up call,” he said. “Weight had been something I wasn’t really worried about or checking, and now my size and weight was stopping me from doing something I wanted to do.”

So he began hitting the gym two times a day, six days a week – a grueling routine he still maintains to this day, despite a busy work schedule that includes serving as Logistics Director for Baja Sharkeez and simultaneously operating his own craft beer establishment, Brooklyn Bar, in Lawndale.

And his commitment is paying off. Kyle has already shed 110 pounds, dropping his weight from 355 pounds to 245 pounds, since joining CHF in June of last year. He notices a new bounce in his step, positive self-esteem, more confidence and far fewer excuses.

“Eliminate the snooze button, it was the worst thing ever invented,” said Kyle. “When your alarm goes off get up, that was my excuse for a long time, that I didn’t have time to work out, but everyone is busy and it’s an easy excuse. Set your alarm for an hour earlier and go start your day!”

An early riser, Kyle is usually in the gym by 5:30 or 6 a.m. “You get a sense of accomplishment from working out early that just sets the pace for the rest of the day. Before, I’d wake up at 7:30 or 8 a.m. and drag myself into work; now I’m up at 5:30 a.m. and have already put in solid hours in my day before work. I’ve already done so many things that other people who didn’t wake up that early haven’t done.”

Another rule Kyle now lives by: there is no end to a fitness journey. “After these few months, I can’t imagine not working out daily. It’s not supposed to be handed to you and that’s also one of the things I love about fitness, you get out of it what you put into it.”

Kyle’s advice to others looking to replicate his success: treat every day like its Monday. “So many people get caught up in aiming for Wednesday, then getting to Friday, which is counted as a weekend day because most people have mentally checked out of what they’re doing. If you just treat every day like its Monday, the work day that you dread, you learn to love it. Why shouldn’t a Thursday and Friday be met with the work ethic you have on a Monday?”

Kyle explains that when you have the “Monday” set of mind and invest in yourself physically and mentally, you tend to not let other important things in life fall by the wayside like work, relationships and friendships, adding: “When you take care of yourself, it makes everything else that much easier.”

Five Inspirational CHF Members Honored at ‘Spirit of Wellness’ Celebration

Five Center for Health & Fitness (CHF) members were honored last month as part of the “Spirit of Wellness” celebration, put on annually by CHF and Beach Cities Health District (BCHD). CHF members who checked in 250 or 300 times in the past year were also inducted into the 250 and 300 club.

Carol Schiewe

Despite two forms of cancer and a rare degenerative brain disorder, Carol applies a positive, can-do attitude to daily life, including her grueling, five days a week fitness routine at CHF. Watch her video here.

Carmen Sellers

At 82, Carmen is an archetype for healthy, active living. Not only is she an active volunteer with the City of Redondo Beach and BCHD, she also regularly cycles and exercises five to six days per week at CHF. Watch her video here.

Michael Thomas

Though doctor’s recommended surgery, Michael was determined to lose weight from his nearly 400-pound frame the right way through diet and exercise. Since joining CHF, he has lost more than 100 pounds. Watch his video here.
